Clean tools make a daily makeup routine more pleasant. A gentle wash and complete dry are the essentials.
Gather what you need
Use lukewarm water, a mild brush cleanser or gentle soap, and a clean towel. Check the tool maker’s care instructions first, especially for specialty brushes or tools with electronic parts.
Wash the bristles
Hold the brush with bristles pointing down and wet only the bristles. Work a small amount of cleanser through them, then rinse until the water runs clear. Avoid soaking the ferrule—the metal part that holds the bristles—or the handle, since repeated water exposure can loosen glue or damage wood.
Dry before storing
Gently squeeze out excess water with a clean towel and reshape the brush head. Lay it flat with the bristles over the edge of a counter or towel so air can circulate. Let it dry completely before putting it in a closed bag or holder. Do not use high heat to speed up drying.
How often you clean depends on how frequently you use each brush and whether it is used with cream or powder products. Wash visibly soiled tools promptly and never share eye or lip brushes without proper cleaning. Browse our beauty tools for your routine.
